Pizza Stuffed Burgers
Ok...seriously, who doesn't love a good burger!?! And who doesn't love the flavors of pizza?! So I figured, why not combine them!?! TA DA, the pizza stuffed burger was created!
This recipe is also super easy (as always!) and FULL of flavor! I chose to serve it with my homemade zucchini pasta sauce (recipe is also on my blog) and on top of a bed of spinach pasta that I found at Trader Joe's! Having it like that was almost like 3 traditional comfort food meals colliding into a delicious, and yes HEALTHY combo of pizza, burger and spaghetti. All American recipe, huh?
Anywho! Here is how to make it!
What you'll need:
- 1 lb of lean ground turkey (or beef)
-4 to 5 fresh garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp of dried basil
- 1 tsp of pizza seasoning
- 1 dash of hot sauce (I used tobasco)
- 2 Tbsp of ground flax seed (I used this instead of bread crumbs)
- dash of salt and pepper
- 15 pepperoni slices (I used turkey pepperoni)
- shredded italian mix or mozzarella cheese
How to make it:
Put your ground meat in a large mixing bowl. Add your minced garlic clove, dried basil, pizza seasoning, salt pepper, ground flax seed and dash of hot sauce. Mix until well combined with your hands. Form into 10 small patties of even size.
I created an "assembly line" to stuff my burgers once the meat mixture was made, pictured below.
Take 1 of the 10 patties and place in your hand. Place 3 pepperoni slices and a large pinch of cheese onto the middle of the burger (see below). Now top with another burger patty. Pinch around the edges gently and cup with your hands until sides are sealed and you cannot see any of the "stuffing" coming out of the sides.
After you put all of them together like this, throw into a medium sauce pan with 1 tsp of olive oil on a medium-low heat. (I have a gas stove so you may need to adjust the temperate if you are cooking on electric.) Let all the burgers cook on one side or until the start to brown, about 5 minutes. Flip, cover and continue to cook for 5-8 minutes or until the meat is completely cooked. If you are using beef, you can feel free to cook as you wish! ;)
Turn off heat and let them sit covered for a few minutes to ensure the cheese inside is melted and the flavors you added to the meat really come out! Serve on a bun, on top of pasta or just by itself with some pizza sauce for dipping! (You could also easily make these in smaller versions, like stuffed pizza meatballs!) ENJOY!
21 Day Fix: 1 burger counts as 1 1/4 red, 1/2 blue.
